Tiësto changes to Denon DJ SC5000 and X1800 Prime
The Denon DJ Prime series will now be weapons of choice for global superstar DJ Tiësto, who has ‘changed his rider’ and officially chosen the SC5000 Prime Media Player and X1800 Prime DJ Mixer as his go-to DJ gear for all tech riders from now on.
When Denon DJ first announced the DJ SC5000 and X1800, along with the VL12 Prime turntable, as the first phase in their #changeyourrider marketing campaign many of our readers doubted (and most likely still do) whether they’d be able to unseat Pioneer DJ’s almighty stronghold on the professional DJ community.
This announcement that Tiësto has jumped ship and officially endorsed Denon DJ Prime will certainly help their cause.
The announcement follows on from other big name DJs Paul Oakenfold, Laidback Luke and Oliver Heldens who have all come out in support of the Denon DJ Prime series.
In fact you can watch Laidback Luke at the bottom of this page.
The sales pitch
In their press release Tiësto had this to say about choosing the Denon DJ Prime series;
“I knew right away that with the intuitive interface and creative feature set of the Denon Prime gear, I could set myself apart as an individual performer and really advance my creativity in my live DJ sets.”
Brand Manager, Paul Dakeyne says “Globally acknowledged as the most influential DJ of the past 20 years, Tiësto’s imagination and performance horizons are always expanding. After four years of intensive hardware and software development, we are proud that Tiësto instantly recognized what the Prime Series will do for him: it will enable him to perform even more creative and exciting shows for his audiences, worldwide.”
But will Denon DJ Prime unseat the mighty Pioneer DJ Nexus?
When we were teased last year with their #ChangeYourRider campaign and then when they consequently announced the Denon DJ Prime Series the battle lines were once again drawn between Denon and their old foe, Pioneer DJ.
The reaction, as we mentioned, has predictably been one of reservation from the global DJ community who are surprisingly conservative when it comes to changing gear.
People tend to like what they like and of course what they are used to playing off, so this already poses something of a barrier to convince DJs to change gear.
Add to that the fact that Pioneer DJ media players and mixers are found in practically every club and on every single festival stage across the globe and it’s not difficult to appreciate the gravity of the undertaking the Denon DJ Prime series faces in gaining the kind of traction they are clearly after.
Then there’s rekordbox which Pioneer have successfully integrated into the workflow of many DJs who use the onstage gear to perform.
There is no doubt in my mind that the new SC5000 Prime Media Player and the X1800 Prime DJ Mixer are going to be as good as the hype suggests.
In fact, from reading the specs I’m expecting them to be as good if not better than the existing Nexus 2 range from Pioneer DJ.
But a lot hinges on how their Engine Prime Music Management Software fairs too.
Engine Prime is Denon DJ’s answer to Pioneer DJ’s rekordbox just like the new SC5000 Prime Media player is the former’s answer to the CDJ2000NXS.
If it works as seamlessly as rekordbox then as an existing Pioneer DJ user I personally would be happy to play off the new SC5000 Prime. It looks like a pretty amazing new media player and in the past Denon DJ players have always been up there with the best.
In a South African context Denon DJ have also appointed new agents; Viva Afrika, who already do an amazing job with Numark, are now the official distributors in South Africa.
You haven’t heard about the new SC5000 Prime? You can find out more here.
Stock of the SC5000 Prime should be arriving in South Africa during July so you can expect a through A/B review against the CDJNexus2 once I get my hands on the new player and DJ mixer.
