PBMI BMus Prep-Year – Ready yourself to study music
Many aspirant students who wish to embark on a career in music when they leave school are often put off by self-doubt, or not being sure what aspect of music their real passion may lie.
Whilst passion is imperative to success in any field one also requires sufficient music theory or practical knowledge to take on the challenge of studying a degree in music.
The Phoenix Benedict Music Institute (aka PBMI) has a forward thinking approach to prepare students for this.
The PBMI BMus Prep-Year is a course designed to assist students in figuring out exactly what it is they are most passionate about when it comes to music – be it production, performance, composition or teaching for example; there are several ways in which to enjoy a career in music.
The course is designed to get students ready with a clear mindset and equipped with the tools to proceed to studying a music degree.
Think of the PBMI BMus Prep-Year as your opportunity to ready yourself as a student of music. It is a 9-month intensive university-readiness program that will prepare you to pursue tertiary music studies at any accredited tertiary institution.
The course consists of three compulsory modules:
- Music Theory
- Music Practical
- Orchestral studies/History of Music
Plus a fourth elective subject which the student can choose.
Tuition is done on a one-on-one basis with specialist tutors except for the Orchestral Studies/History of Music module which is understandably done in a group lecture. Each term assessments are done with the final year-end assessment to include official London College of Music examinations in the practical module (at least Grade 7), as well as the theory module (at least Grade 5).
Furthermore the PBMI BMus Prep-Year is a part-time course which means you can still hold down a job and/or spend as much time on your music outside of the course to better prepare yourself for the wonderful world of music as a career.
The Phoenix Benedict Music Institute (aka PBMI) is a division of Phoenix Benedict, a company that specialises in producing music for film and television. Notable achievements include scoring the music for the SAFTA award winning ‘Death of a Queen’ in 2009 and more recently the audio branding and music scoring for the 13- episode SABC 1 political thriller ‘Ihawu’, which aired from July to October 2014. The Phoenix Benedict Music tuition brands (PBMA and PBMI) facilitate and tutor students for music degrees and is officially affiliated to the London College of Music, although they also offer grade examinations with other internationally accredited institutions such as UNISA, Trinity and RockSchool.
The Phoenix Benedict Music Institute focuses specifically on preparing future students via the PBMI BMus Prep-Year Course but also offers another unique course called PBMI Beat Nation, which should interest IDM Mag readers across the board.
PBMI Beat Nation teaches electronic music producers how to structure their creations in correct musical format and enables students to take their production beyond simple samples and basic beats to a world of creative possibilities. We have focused quite a bit on the PBMI Beat Nation course over the past few weeks as it is something we feel has been missing in most electronic music related courses countrywide.
