Reality Test from Iliuchina| Diary of a DJane
My first encounter with Nica (Iliuchina) was in 2011 when she played at “The Zone Festival.” We chaperoned her to the party, and hit it off instantly, chatting up a storm about everything from that day on whenever we meet up its always crazy fun. I must admit the first time I heard about her I was intrigued as there was talk of a young 21 year old Israeli girl kicking ass overseas. Her music was next level, she was ripping it up and her music spread like wildfire and her sound soon demanded respect. The first track I ever heard of her’s was a collaboration with Zinx – called Audio Violator, I think I might have played that track over 1000 times, and I just loved it every mix! One of the reasons I love to jam Iliuchina tracks is because her production is tight, the bass lines devour dance floors, and her melodies are illustrative and of course this make me dance like a retard.
Not many artists can make different styles of psytrance, but Nica is managing fine; women can multitask, it’s part of our genetic makeup 🙂
I asked her what influenced her to start a progressive act, and she reminded me of last year’s Jungala 2014 when we were dancing together in the front row for Vertigo’s set, and she said that we had so much fun, that she felt she needed to explore the PROG side of life. Since that day she manifested Reality Test. I was so happy when she told me that story, as we literally had THE BEST TIME that Sunday afternoon getting down on that dance floor. It’s so amazing that she left that floor feeling inspired to make a new act, I on the other hand left that dance floor full of smiles!
When ‘us’ girls all connect we really vibe well together, especially when ALL the girls are together like in the beginning of March on my tour in Portugal, and I have said it before, we have an
understanding and a mutual respect for one another, there is no sense of jealousy or bullshit, we all know the work and time we have put in to be standing together on the stages around the world, and it is an amazing humbling sisterhood that is bonded through our adventures together.
When I see Nica play I feel so proud as she is one of the women in the scene that is on top form and in my opinion is the Queen, and I only have the utmost love and respect for her. (I sound in love…. but I’m just so happy for her success). We have a lot more than just psytrance in common, we both know how hard it is to lead this type of lifestyle and to have a relationship in this line of work, always on the road or out for gigs, it’s hard to leave your partner at 3 am to go rock a morning dance floor or close a club, and the challenges of choosing and sacrificing certain things other women might desire like children and a family and how that would affect us….… one day! is both our responses….
Reality Test the name comes from Nica’s very first track name and the sound is really phat, and the beats are solid. I can definitely hear Nica’s style in her latest act, it’s her expression in her melody’s and build ups that I recognise Iluchina, and this is not a bad thing, it is just Nica and what she creates. I asked her if it was it a challenge to wrap her head around making the progressive sound because she has mastered the twilight sound for so many years – she said and I quote:
Yes it was at the beginning, not ideas wise, but production wise. The ideas came from themselves, that’s the reason I started the new project. But the production level is way more higher in progressive than psytrance, but I saw it as something good because then I got o learn more work techniques and how to improve my sound. Actually it’s harder to make Iliuchina now after making proggy for a year”
This year’s Jungala Festival is going to be a magical experience, I have seen all the prep work going on behind the scenes at the Jungala headquarters, and lots of amazing décor and sounds will be entertaining us for many hours.
Plus it’s my birthday weekend so I hope you will join me in the celebrations. 🙂
Catch my set on Sunday at 22:30 and both of Nica’s Live acts – Iliuchina (Sunday 00:00) and Reality Test (Monday 13:30).
I would also like to just add that I saw Mad Maxx, Mad Tribe and Space Tribe in Portugal at a Samavada Festival last year, and they blew my mind; full psychedelic coming our way, so prepare yourselves!!!
