Congrats on Big Nuz’ Pound for Pound reaching Platinum!
Thanks, it’s really humbling to know that we have a loyal following as “Afrotainment”. Big Nuz works really hard, and we always have the consumer’s interests at heart when we record.
To what do you attribute the dominance of the Durban Kwaito sound to?
For me, it’s passion, hard work and being clinical at what I do. Understanding your market goes a long way because things don’t stay the same, you have to keep evolving with each offering.
Having played overseas, how well does the Durban sound translate on foreign dance floors?
People receive it very well because it’s something they’ve never heard before. I have also observed that as a DJ, it always boils down to song selection and mixing in order for people to appreciate what you are serving them. London is always beautiful, they connect easily with South African music.
I’m in the final stages of ‘Ezase Afro Vol2’. I have thrown all my energy into this album, and party patrons can expect a very hot album filled with surprise guest appearances by South Africa’s prominent artists.
What do you say to those that pigeon hole the Afrotainment sound as ‘commercial’?
Yes our sound is commercial, as much as David Guetta’s sound is commercial but check who is sitting at the number spot… Ezase Qedela wena. Our mission is to make South Africa dance; hence we have made Durban the main dance floor with the ‘MTN FACT DURBAN ROCKS’ on the 7th of July, people look forward to rejoicing with us through our music and that’s what we are here for.
What do you think the next big development in South African dance music will be?
We need to develop events that aim to attract people from abroad. South Africa is currently the House music capital, guys like Black Coffee, Vinny Da Vinci and Oskido have helped a lot to make this possible. Now it’s time we stage events that will be recognized world wide.
Any hot new Afrotainment acts we should be looking out for?
Right now if you don’t know BHAR, you need to get with the program. Look out for AFROTAINMENT’s first Hip Hop artist who goes by the name of Duncan, he’s hot and he’s about to change the game. Also look out for Fisherman’s most anticipated Fish Tank Vol 2 this year.
